ABOUT

Founded in 2013, SurfaceMatter Design (SMD) is a multidisciplinary design studio located in Providence, RI. The focus of our work is creating memorable experiences through branding, wayfinding, and environmental graphic design to help people navigate and experience space. Our practice integrates both 2D design (surfaces) and 3D design (matter) bringing together a multidisciplinary approach to all our work.

We work within the corporate, educational, public, and institutional sectors offering the following services:

  • Graphic identity

  • Placemaking

  • Public art

 

LEADERSHIP

As owner and principal of SMD, John Seeley serves as the creative director and project strategist. He leads clients to successful solutions by providing a strong, multi-disciplinary approach through more than 28 years of experience as a creative consultant. 

Before establishing SMD, John spent over 18 years developing his career at prominent design firms including The Burdick Group in San Francisco, Fitch Boston, and former Principal at Selbert Perkins Design in Boston.

John received a BFA from Rhode Island School of Design and an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art. 

His projects have included public and institutional wayfinding programs, branded environments, and information systems for clients in various sectors including MIT, Princeton University, City of Montpelier VT, City of Providence RI, Federal Realty Trust, New England Development, and Hasbro among others.
